Our Story

A Family Tradition with a Lasting Impact

Discover how a Thanksgiving morning run inspired the Turkey Trot for the Memory and grew into a Shrewsbury tradition supporting Alzheimer’s research and care.

How It Began

Justice Francis P. O’Connor served on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court while remaining deeply connected to his family, faith, and the Shrewsbury community. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he met his eight-year journey with Alzheimer’s disease with characteristic courage and optimism.

For the O’Connor family, Thanksgiving began with early morning Mass at St. Mary’s Church, followed by a five-mile walk or run. Family and friends would then gather on the front porch, often welcoming members of the community who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.

After Justice O’Connor’s passing in 2007, the family continued the tradition in his memory. In 2011, it grew into the first Turkey Trot for the Memory, inviting the wider community to participate while raising funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease.

“If you really want to clear your head and stay as healthy as you can, go out and move—do anything—just do something to move.”

— Justice Francis P. O’Connor

15 Years of Community & Impact

For 15 years, the Turkey Trot for the Memory has brought family, friends, and neighbors together each Thanksgiving to remember loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s disease and support research, care, and hope for future generations.

Honoring Francis P. O’Connor
